Products
KFPL's principal product is round logs which KFPL exports to a number of countries in Asia and the Pacific.
KFPL is able to produce 6000m3 per month of plantation grown logs.
KFPL produces two grades of round logs for export:
- J grade logs or peeler grade. J grade logs are KFPL's highest quality logs. They are used for top quality sawn timber.
- K grade logs or sawlog grade. These logs provide sawn timber but do contain some defects. Logs can also be peeled, but with lower rates of recovery.
For calculation of the volume of each log KFPL uses the Brereton scaling method as defined by the Papua New Guinea Forest Authority. The two ends of the log are measured underbark. Each end is measured twice (at right angles to each other) and the average diameter then calculated. The volume is calculated from the average diameter of the two ends of the log and the length of the log.
Log prices are quoted in US$ per cubic metre FOB ex Pulisingau or Ringgi - KFPL’s export harbours on Kolombangara.
KFPL’s own sawmill on Kolombangara produces 300m3 of sawn timber per year.
Sawn timber can be exported by container through Noro, the deep water container port, 30 minutes from KFPL’s headquarters.
Sawn timber can also be shipped as break bulk cargo, together with round logs.
Sawn timber is sold "green" or air dried as there are no kiln drying facilities in the Solomons.
All round logs and sawn timber are FSC certified.
